Assemblies
Educational and entertaining presentations which bring large groups of children together are held throughout the school year. Hillside also encourages students in upper grades to plan and perform in several programs. Students who do not meet teacher and school standards for behavior and attendance will not be allowed to attend assemblies.
Field Trips
Field trips supplement school studies. Transportation is usually provided by school bus, and trips are overseen by teachers. Room reps often accompany the group. A permission slip is always sent home prior to a field trip. In addition, parents sign a field trip permission slip at registration. Only students meeting the teacher's behavior and work standards can participate in field trips. Students not attending the field trips are assigned to another classroom for that day.
Parties
Although neither necessary nor encouraged, birthdays may be celebrated by distribution of baked goods at the end of the school day. Invitations to private student parties should not be distributed at school.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade have room parties prior to Christmas, Valentine's Day, and at Halloween. Children in grades seven and eight may have three dances per year sponsored by Student Council and supervised by school personnel.
Contests, Drives and Collections
Board of Education policy limits the school and students from becoming involved in community drives and contests. School sponsored drives are allowed only with prior Principal and Superintendent approval.
