Student Emergency Information Sheet
All students are required to have a student emergency information sheet on file, which lists the student's physician, an emergency number for contact of one or both parents, and the name and telephone number of a responsible adult who can take care of the child if parents or guardians are unreachable. All medical conditions, such as allergies, seizures, etc., must be indicated on the emergency card. ANY CHANGE IN EMERGENCY INFORMATION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE IMMEDIATELY.
Disaster Drills
Procedures for disaster drills are posted in each room for use for civil defense alerts.
Fire Drills/Fire Safety
Fire Drills are conducted at unannounced times. Each room has an evacuation plan posted, which includes an alternate route in case of blocked exits. Heat detection devices have been installed in critical places to automatically activate the fire alarm. Regular fire inspections are conducted by the fire department and by the Hillside staff.
Lockdown Drills
Students and staff are instructed as to procedures for securing the building in case of an intruder or a similar situation. School officials work closely with local police in conducting these drills.
Environmental Emergencies/Early Dismissal
If there is a building emergency such as boiler breakdown, flooding, lack of sanitary conditions, or if hazardous weather conditions pose a threat to safety, the building could be closed. Closings will be announced on local radio and TV stations, and Internet sites. A condition of this nature could occur during the school day and warrants early dismissal if children's health or safety are endangered. Please plan for this emergency situation by making arrangements, so that your child can go to a neighbor's if you are not at home.
Student Health Emergencies
In case of illness or accident, the school nurse is on duty daily from 8:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. to treat health emergencies. In her absence, the office immediately contacts the home when children are ill or injured. Only authorized school personnel can administer medication in any form to students.
Accident Insurance
Insurance is available to all students which covers accidents occurring on school grounds, and to and from school. This may be purchased at enrollment each year. Applications are available in the school office. Parents of students enrolled in the athletic program are encouraged to supply hospital/ medical insurance for their children, through this plan or any other. If a child's atschool injury requires medical treatment, parents must report the incident immediately to the school office, so necessary steps are taken to report the incident to the insurer.
