Possession of Weapons
According to Board Policy file IG (Pursuant to the federal Gun Free Schools Act and Section 10 22.6 of The School Code, it is the policy of this Board of Education to expel from school for at least one calendar year any student who has possession or control of or uses or transfers a "weapon" at school, any school sponsored activity or event, or any activity or event which bears a reasonable relationship to school. The term "weapon" in this context is defined in the Regulations implementing this policy. The Superintendent may recommend to the Board of Education modification of this expulsion requirement on a case by case basis.)
Possession of Electronic Devices
Student possession of electronic devices including pagers, cell phones, laser lights, hand held games and cassette/CD players are prohibited on school property at all times. Items brought to school must be picked up by parents at the school office.
Appearance/Behavior
Students are expected to behave and dress in an appropriate manner, and to maintain standards that do not cause disruptions to the school day. Students are asked to assist in keeping the school a safe and secure environment in which all can work and grow.

If a question arises about the safety or appropriateness of dress, the Principal will contact the parents to bring proper clothing to school.

The rules of courtesy are the model for student behavior. Everyone is required to respect the rights of others, so that all can enjoy a positive and productive learning environment. Disruptive behavior will result in disciplinary action. Persistent poor behavior can result in suspension from school. Remember: STUDENTS WILL BE SENT HOME FOR CONTINUED MISBEHAVING.

All children are expected to respect personal and school property. School property that is damaged or destroyed with intent must be paid for by the student and/or parent of the child involved. Personal property which has been damaged or destroyed by a student other than the owner should be replaced or paid for by the person causing the damage. Bringing expensive personal property to school is not allowed, unless requested for an educational purpose by a teacher.
Prohibition of Tobacco Use By Students
The possession of tobacco in any form by students on school property at any time is prohibited. Students who violate this policy will be disciplined by the administration on an individual basis. (See Policy JFCG "Prohibition of Tobacco Use on School Property" in the Discipline Policy.)
Behavioral or Academic In School Probation
A student who has demonstrated inappropriate behavior may be placed on Behavioral Probation. A student on Behavioral Probation will be marked every period for behavior AND tardiness.

Students placed on Behavioral Probation receive a probation card and are monitored daily by their teachers. The students must bring this probation card to the office where it is evaluated at the end of each school day. Students not meeting the requirements for any teacher will receive a detention for each unfavorable report.

During this probation or ineligibility period, students are excluded from all extra curricular activities sponsored by Hillside School and may not participate or be involved as a spectator at schoolsponsored events. Students are required to leave the building at the close of the school day or at the end of the detention period issued. Students are taken off School Probation when they have fulfilled a pre established period of time with favorable reports. Eligibility is reinstated the following week.

Students who have active Individualized Education Plans will be subject to the same discipline code as all other students. The exception can be that an I.E.P. team will be convened to discuss alternate programs for students demonstrating consistently inappropriate behavior.
